Description:

Life Downstairs: British Culture in Fact, Fiction and Film with Ann McClellan*

The master/servant relationship is a popular subject matter in films such as Remains of the Day and Gosford Park. Additionally, PBS has produced wildly successful TV series such as Upstairs, Downstairs, Manor House and, of course, Downton Abbey. Join Ann McClellan as we explore the history behind the rise and fall of British servants and why Americans are so fascinated by their stories on page and screen.

McClellan is a professor of English and the Interim Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Plymouth State University where she teaches 19th and 20th Century British literature. She is the author of How British Women Writers Transformed the Campus Novel, and Sherlock’s World: Fanfiction and the Reimagining of BBC’s Sherlock, as well as, numerous articles on cultural topics.
